Photo Gallery: Anti-Poaching
Warthog are notoriously difficult animals to immobilise. Their metabolism is very rapid and they seem to be resistant to tranquilizers. So when I was called out to assist in removing a snare from around the thorax of a warthog, I was not optimistic.
The pig was extremely stressed and was losing condition rapidly. It was apparent that if we did not assist this animal it would suffer for a few more days and then die.
As the pictures below show, the immobilisation went extremely smoothly and was completely successful:

This is the warthog as the drug begins to take effect. The wire snare is visible around its chest. One of our team is rushing in to cover its eyes in order to calm the animal and protect the eyes from UV damage.

Here you see the animal once the drug has taken effect.

The snare has been removed with bolt-cutters and antiseptic is being applied.

One of the greatest dangers to immobilised animals is the very real possibility of hyperthermia – particularly at midday in September in Victoria Falls. In this picture you see the animal being doused with water in order to prevent it from over-heating.

After its ordeal the animal is left to recover and come-around from the chemical immobilisation. The snare has been removed, antibiotics administered and now we move the animal into the shade and wait for it to move off on its own.
